Title: Leading and Managing in a High Performance Health System
Close on 200 senior managers from across the health sector attended this Leadership Briefing jointly hosted by the Health Management Institute of Ireland and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Michael J. Dowling outlined the development of the North Shore-LIJ Healthcare System and shared his vision for the future. Administrative Managers, Clinicians and Nursing Management work closely together as a unified management team. The backbone of the system is the commitment to teamwork, metrics and training all staff. The commitment to training was demonstrated by Lawrence G. Smith who told attendees about the development of a Medical School and the on-going investment in management training at all levels. During a very active Q+A session, both speakers generously shared their experiences of leading and managing an integrated health system which has grown rapidly to include 16 hospitals, more than 270 ambulatory care centres, medical and research centres and is staffed by more than 44,000 employees.
